Human nutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) was originally identified as a 25kD protein-bound to gelatinase from neutrophils. NGAL is normally expressed at very low levels inseveral human tissues, which includes kidneays, lungs, stomach and colon. The epithelia (layers of cell) are injured and NGAL is expressed.
NGAL has shown to be one of the earliest and mostly strongly induced genes and proteins in the kidney after ischemic or nephrotoxic injury in animals. NGAL was easily detected in the blood and urine after Acute Kidney Injury (AKI).
NGAL is emerging as major predictive biomarker for AKI.
It is is now conveniently available as Bioporto Diagnostics Human Rapid NGAL Elisa Test and The NGAL Test - rapid test for most clinical chemistry analyzers.
